Well, only one entry was sent in for the contest, so it ended up being scrapped (as I'm sure man of you noticed by now). Maybe next time!

We could also still use more affiliates for our club. Any suggestions?


What is MIRRORMASK?

Mirrormask is an amazing fantasy movie produced by the Jim Henson company, written by the great Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, and directed by Dave McKean.

It follows the story of a young girl named Helena who dreams of running away from the circus to have a normal life. After her mother falls ill, she wakes up in a very different world, where everyone wears masks and books fly back to the library if the reader rejects them. In this new world, the Queen of Light has fallen asleep, allowing the darkness from the Land of Shadows to invade, and Helena must find the Mirrormask to awaken the Queen, bring balance to the world, and save her mother as well as herself.

Rules are:

- Design an original mask. These masks may portray an original character's personaltiy, characters from the movie who don't have masks yet, or it may be one to express you. An explanation for why you chose to make it look a certain way is encouraged, but not required. Just remember to give your masks some kind of MEANING, not just to make them look pretty. You can also make a mask for your original character/s.
- It does NOT need to be a full-face mask (although it can be, if you like). It can just cover the eyes, or cover one side of the face like in Phantom of the Opera.
- You may not copy any of the pre-existing mask designs used in either the books or the motion picture versions of MirrorMask.
- If you choose to design a mask for a character from the books or movies, choose a character that has no mask design assigned to them. i.e. no Valentine mask redesigns.
- Any visual medium is acceptable. Sorry authors, this isn't a writing contest. Maybe later!
- You may change your entry any time until the deadline, but only one entry per person.
- Please send your entries in note form, not by leaving a comment somewhere. It's easier to keep track of with notes.

Judging criteria is focused on skill and creativity. You don't need to be a master colorist to win the contest or have the most intricate details to win, but it doesn't hurt if you do!

Deadline date is November 8th. The deadline has already been extended by two weeks; it will not be extended again. If no more entries are sent in by then, the concert will be cancelled, and there will be no consolation prizes given.

First place gets a 3-month sub and a print of their choice (15 dollar or less value) OR a free commission by *oliverat of the same value (see the cost details here so you know what you can get).
Second place gets a 3-month subscription, and third place will get one. If there aren't enough entries the prizes won't be as fabulous () so let's get those entries comin'!

Club Rules

1. How to join - either send a note to ~mirrormask-club, leave a comment on the page or in the journal asking to join the club.

2. When you join, please put us somewhere noticable on your dA account - your journal, your sig, whatever. Just make sure to link to us. Spread the word!

3. Add us to your watch list. This way you will be notified of any updates to the club.

3. About submitting works... Pretty much anything is welcome. HOWEVER, we ask that you not submit pictures that violate any copyright laws or rules on dA. Just don't submit anything you think will get the club or it's members (or you) in trouble. Also, please specify if you want this to go in the Fanart category of Books/Novels or TV/Movies. If there is no specification, I will just put it in movies.

However, the maskmakers are located in Italy, and the masks are rather pricey. All of the masks are beautifully designed and well-made, so if you can spare the money, consider buying one!

You can also find the illustrated script book, along with various other Mirrormask items, on Amazon. It comes with the original script (lines and scenes that were removed are highlighted in gray). It also has pictures from the movie, both in-scene and in-filming.
